USK u3a Reading Group No. 1.

** Please note this group is not running at present **

We have 9 members in our group. We meet in each other’s houses on the 3rd Thursday of the month at 2pm. During the coronavirus outbreak we have been emailing each other and phoning , particularly to members that do not have a computer.

We have read a variety of books since we started our group in 2005, commencing with The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, to our latest book The Salt Path.

The last book that we read before coronavirus struck was The Wedding by Dorothy West. We had a quiet period during the first and second wave of Covid and started doing reviews by email in the autumn of 2020.

We had our first group meeting outside on the 27th of May 2021, It was wonderful to get back together again, the weather was beautiful, it was lovely to chat and enjoy a cup of tea and cake.

USK u3a Reading Group No. 2

Book Group 2 meets on the first Thursday morning of the month at 10.30am. At present we have 8 members which we feel is a number that works well as we meet in each other’s homes. There is no obligation to host a meeting if space for eight is a problem or for other reasons you are not able to offer a room at home.
We democratically choose the book titles for the year ahead by voting on the list of suggestions accumulated at the end of each year. Our discussions are preceded by tea or coffee and cake or biscuits and general chat and any u3a or group business. There is rarely unanimous agreement on the enjoyment or appreciation of the books, which gives us the opportunity to consider other views with amicable but lively debate!
Please register your interest in joining a book group with the Usk u3a membership secretary

USK u3a Reading Group No. 3

As the smallest and most recent of the U3A’s Book Groups in this area, we’re still small but very friendly! (5 members currently, but open to more). We meet in each other’s houses in turn, fortified by tea/coffee and Kit Kats. Taking it month by month, we decide at each meeting the date of the next in order to suit as many members as possible and accommodate their last-minute arrangements and availability. Normally we meet between 1pm-3pm but being super-flexible we can adjust to accommodate school-times or medical appointments or whatever Fate throws at us….! We also take a break in August by mutual agreement, and have a purely social get-together in December.

In 2023 these are some of the titles we read:

“Why be Normal when you could be happy?” by Jeanette Winterson
“The Wolf Border” by Sarah Hall
“A Gentleman in Moscow” by Amor Towles
“The Island of Missing Trees” by Elif Shafak
“The Salt Path” by Raynor Wynne
“The Glass House” by Eva Chase
“Without Warning..” by Kit de Waal
“The Marriage Portrait” by Maggie O’Farrell

In 2024 we’re planning to read:
“Small Things Like These” by Clare Keegan
“The Wild silence” by Raynor Wynne
“The Island” by Victoria Hislop
“The Beekeeper of Aleppo” by Christy Lefteri
“The Whalebone Theatre” by Joanna Quinn
“Two Women in Rome” by Sarah Buchan…
